Android Notifications Not Showing: What to Check

Check Android notification permissions, battery restrictions and Do Not Disturb without assuming missing alerts mean an account problem.

Understand where alerts can be blocked
A missing notification does not necessarily mean the sender failed or the account is inactive. Android has several levels of control: system permissions, per-app notification categories, sound settings and battery restrictions. A message can arrive while the banner or sound is suppressed.
Begin by identifying what is missing. Are there no notifications at all, are they silent, or do they appear only after opening the app? These different patterns lead to different checks.
Review per-app notification permission
Open Android Settings and inspect the notification permission for the relevant app. Modern Android versions often ask permission when the application first tries to send alerts. If permission was declined, later alerts may not appear until the setting is changed.
Some applications let users choose categories such as service messages, updates and marketing. Enabling one category does not necessarily enable all others. Avoid switching on every category indiscriminately; configure only alerts you actually need.
Battery optimisation and background behaviour
Power-saving modes may delay background activity to conserve battery. The amount of delay depends on Android version, device maker and how the app handles push messages. A phone that delivers alerts only after unlock may have background restrictions unrelated to login credentials.
Changing battery settings can increase power consumption. Record the prior state and test one change at a time, especially on devices with manufacturer-specific application sleep lists.
For the related background, see Android compatibility guidance; that guide covers the separate question in more detail.
Do Not Disturb and silent delivery
Do Not Disturb can suppress sound and visual interruptions while allowing notifications to remain in history. A quiet notification may still be delivered even though you did not see a banner. Inspect the system notification history if your Android version supports it.
Make sure the phone time and quiet-hours schedule are accurate. A scheduled focus mode can make notifications appear inconsistent when the schedule is simply active at certain hours.
What alerts should never ask you to do
A notification is not proof of sender identity. Do not trust an alert instructing you to reveal a one-time password, share an account code or install a new application from an unfamiliar domain. Attackers can imitate familiar brand wording in push or SMS messages.
Open the service through a verified bookmark or known page instead of following an unexpected urgent notification. This distinction matters even when you have enabled the app’s notifications correctly.
If your question is instead about new-phone login preparation, use that focused article rather than applying unrelated troubleshooting steps here.
Test and document changes
After adjusting one setting, allow time for a legitimate new notification rather than relying on old alerts to reappear. Note whether mobile data, Wi-Fi, battery saver or focus mode changes the behaviour.
If an account-specific message is missing, consult the verified support process; general Android notification advice cannot confirm whether a particular message was sent.
